Big Pumpkin

Acting out the book in drama class.

Pumpkin Explorations

After estimating the height, width, circumference, # of lines and number of seeds in the group's pumpkin, students measured. How many seeds do you think are inside a pumpkin?  Ask us tonight at home. Maybe your family will be the lucky winner of one of these beauties!

Organization

Today we talked about the learning skill, "Organization".

Here's what the report card says:
-Devises and follows a plan and process for completing work and tasks.
-Establishes priorities and manages time to complete tasks and achieve goals.
-Identifies, gathers, evaluates and uses information, technology and resources to complete tasks.

Here's what we came up with:
Organization
This year, we will show we are organized by:
· Putting things in the right place, the right way.
· Keeping our classroom tidy.
· Putting books back properly.
· Printing neatly and writing details in order, with a beginning, middle and end.
· Check the list to make sure I do my work in order.
· Organizing students into straight, silent lines/squads.

Book Talks

Each month we do formal presentations. Last month we shared our autobiographies. This month we are giving book talks about a fiction text. These friends decided to do their presentation together :)
Next month our book talk will be about a non-fiction text.

Book Talks

Next week we are doing fiction book talks. Here is the anchor chart we made together today:

Pulleys make "work" easier

Lift the bucket of bricks so the handle is door knob height:
No pulley = very hard

1 pulley = a little bit easier

2 pulleys = easiest

Making Apple Sauce

Cutting the apples with Ms. Van Gent ...
Cooking time ...
Mashing time ...  We used a colander (or chinois) and a wooden pestle to separate the skin and seeds from the flesh of the apple.
Eating time!

The Winning Engineer

Congrats to Payton for building the strongest bridge out of a single piece of paper.  Her bridge supported 83 pennies and spanned a 12.5 cm gap between desks. Can you build a stronger bridge?

Independent Work

Today we are looking at the learning skill, "Independent Work".

Here's what the report card says:
-Independently monitors, assesses and revises plans to complete tasks and meet goals.
-Uses class time appropriately to complete tasks.
-Follows instructions with minimal supervision.

Here's a video we watched:

Here's the ideas we came up with:
Independent Work
This year, we will show we are independent workers by:
· Working by ourselves and not interrupting/bothering other people.
· Listening to instructions.
· Work without the teacher standing over us.
· Reading by ourselves.
· Asking good questions when we don’t understand (not goofy questions).  You can ask your seat mates or the teacher if she’s free.
· Not playing in our desks or talking while the teacher is talking.
· Doing our own work and not copying other people’s work.
· Being neat and adding our name, the date and titles to our work.  We will also underline our dates and titles.
· Starting our work right away and working the whole time.

Responsibility

Last month we talked about all of the Learning Skills that we see on Report Cards.  We looked at the specific examples 2/3M made for term 2 last year.
Today we are making our own anchor chart with specific examples of how we can show responsibility in this class, this year.
Here is a video we watched today.  The words to the song are below the video.

Responsibility Song
I am responsible, I am reliable
I always follow through, with what I say I’m gonna do
I am dependable, I hold myself accountable
I take responsibility, and do what needs to be done

I show self-control, use good judgment
I think about the consequences of my actions
Responsibility, it is my duty
Fulfilling all of my moral obligations

If I mess up I will always fess up
I will keep my head up, I’m never gonna give up
It is my duty and responsibility to follow through
You can count on me to do what I say that I’m gonna do

I never make excuses, when everything goes wrong
I take responsibility and don’t blame anyone
I put the blame on me, stand up and take the lead
Come now and follow me, let’s make this a priority

I show self-control, use good judgment
I think about the consequences of my actions
Responsibility, it is my duty
Fulfilling all of my moral obligations

This is what the report card says:
-Fulfils responsibilities and commitments within the learning environment.
-Completes and submits classwork, homework and assignments according to agreed upon timelines.
-Takes responsibility for and manages own behaviour.

Here's what we came up with:
Responsibility
This year, we will show responsibility by:
· Respecting the classroom’s materials and the other people in the classroom.
· Admitting if we do something wrong, trying to fix it and NOT blaming others.
· Doing our jobs.
· Being honest.
· Doing our best work, and remembering YOUR best is the best YOU can do.
· Paying attention when someone is teaching or helping us, and NOT letting our minds’ wander.
·  Helping others when they need it.
· Getting our work done on time.
· Keeping our dear teacher happy.
